Some videos were not copied to the iPad because they cannot be played on this iPad.

I've got about 14 videos that apparently won't copy over to my iPad. I read from the forum that it's likely something to do with codecs or format. I have Handbrake and am happy to do some conversion. The problem is that the error message does not give me any idea which are the 14 videos! I search my entire MacBook for the file names but cannot find any one of them! I think they are like in hexadecimal or something. How do I find these 14 videos in my MacBook so that I can fix them?

Problem solved. I have been searching for these cryptic files in the “My Mac” folder, which technically should cover everywhere in my MacBook, and couldn’t find these files. Got a call with Apple Support and they asked me to try the “Shared” folder and voila! The mp4 files were inside the photos library, the one with .photoslibrary extension. Makes sense. Now that I found them, the next thing is to fix them.

I don’t know where and what these mp4 files are. As you can see, these 14 files do not have any names in their file name so I don’t know whether they are home videos I shot, YouTube videos I downloaded or movie shows/TV serials I bought from iTunes. I have searched the whole of my MacBook, including hidden files in the Library but I can’t find any of them.

So I can’t answer your questions. I don’t know what these files are because I can’t even locate any of them in my MacBook. All I get is this error notification from Finder when I sync my iPad or iPhone with my MacBook. It doesn’t tell me where these files are. If I could find them, I would be able to check what’s wrong with these files. But the point is: I can’t find them!

Hi Christopher,

We’ll be happy to see what we can do to help out today.

But we want to make sure we understand, so we have a few questions.

  • Where did you download the movies from?
  • Did you have to convert the movies from a different format? If so, what was the original format? How was the file converted?
  • Have you searched Spotlight for all the .mp4 files? If not, see Narrow your search results on Mac for details.

Let us know if you still need help.

Cheers!

I found a new problem related to these videos and would like to ask if anyone has a solution. These videos that could not be synced to iPad or iPhone were all time-lapse videos. Some have mov extension and some have mp4 extension. The common thing about them is that they could not be synced over to the iOS devices through Finder. But here's the thing: once I move the video into the Photos app on my Mac and then use Finder to sync photos to my iPhone or iPad, the same error occurs, that is, the video could not be synced because it could not be played on the iOS devices. It's odd.

1) The time-lapse video was taken using the iPhone

2) It plays ok on the iPhone after it is taken

3) It plays ok when air dropped to the Mac

4) It plays ok when imported into the Photos app on the Mac

5) BUT ... it won't sync over to the iPhone or iPad because it supposedly cannot be played (which is not true, see (2)).

I have tried to use Handbrake to convert these time-lapse videos but they still won't sync over.

Does anyone have time-lapse videos inside your Photos app on your Mac? And do these time-lapse videos sync over to your iPhone or iPad?
