Tilt problem on 2021 iPads

I have noticed a issue with tilt and palm rejection on 2021 iPads, all models. I have replicated it on 4 different 2021 iPads with different pencils. The issue is not there on older iPads.

The issue is that when going from tilt to holding the pencil straight while resting two finger on the screen the tilt is still activate until you lift fingers off the screen. The issue is there only when your hand is touching the screen.

Hello Stefan,

From your last message, you mentioned that all of the compatible iPad models you tested with your pencil at the Apple Store on display experienced this. While this fact(along with the other details mentioned) do point towards expected behavior, you also mentioned speaking with a tech during your visit.

What's unclear is what was discussed between you and them. While you may need to get in touch with Apple Support about what's happening, please provide us more details about what was discussed with the tech, and we'll go from there.

Have a good one!

Hey there Stefan,

We'd like to help however we can regarding using your iPad and Apple Pencil.

You mentioned that this occurs across four different models, along with trying multiple pencils. While this may be expected behavior, we'd like to help rule out some basics:

  1. Which iPad model are you currently using?
  2. As iPadOS 15 recently released, is this the version currently installed? You can verify this within Settings > General > About. Here's a link that'll show how to first back up, then Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  3. Have you tried a restart? If not, this link shows how to Restart your iPad.

Take care!

Thank you for the reply!

I noticed this issue first on a 5th generation iPad Pro, but all iPads fro 2021 that I tried this on have the same issue. The 3rd generation iPad Pro I’m using right now does NOT have this problem at all, so if it’s expected behavior tilt and palm rejection got worse with the new 2021 models. It’s clearly different and with the same OS installed.

It’s not an app issue because I can demonstrate this in the native Notes app, but the problem is in all apps that use the pencil tilt function.

I have tried this with iPad OS 14.7, 14.8 and 15.0. The four different iPads I tested this on all had 15.0 and all from 2021.

I have tried a restart and a complete restore of the 5th generation iPad Pro, and also iPads in the Apple store on display. I have demonstrated the issue to an Apple technician and he could see the issue. This could of course still be intended behavior, but again then the tilt and palm rejection got worse on only the new iPads release in 2021.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the reply again! The tech saw the tilt issue and offered a replacement iPad. I’m still waiting for that iPad to come in.

If it’s expected behavior it would be interesting if that could get acknowledged. Did you see the video I linked with my first message? It illustrates that the tilt function does not stop when moving the pencil from tilt to straight. That’s the main point of a tilt function. If it doesn’t stop then tilt on the Apple pencil is more or less useless for me now. It’s like breaking the tip of your pencil when you are drawing leaving you with a blunt pencil. I really hope that is not intended.

This is making the Apple pencil a much worse drawing tool than on previous iPads, and makes me worried about the quality of the new screens. How much delay between switching from tilt to straight is tolerated on the new iPads? Why did it get worse? Will this new palm rejection have an impact on other functions? It this a hardware limitation on the new screens or can it get fixed with software?

Like I said there is no issue on my previous iPads, so if you could find out if this is intended I think a lot of artist would be interested.

Thank you!

Thanks again! I will do that, however…

There’s been a few reports about other palm rejection issues on the Procreate forum and the team working for Procreate has been able to reproduce my issue and the other problems and feel that they might be related.

Hopefully Apple can figure out what is going on, and the first step towards that is looking into this a bit more seriously. It feels a bit like wherever I report this issue someone want me to report it somewhere else instead of grabbing an iPad and testing it out for themself.
