Can I buy only one Airpod?

I am suffering from unilateral deafness, so I would like to buy only one airpod (two would be useless). Does Apple foresee anything in these cases? what are the possibilities for those who live my situation?

Currently, the AirPods only work when both are present. You can use one at a time, but both are needed for the pairing operation.
