How do I get my photos and videos from my iCloud to download on my Mac?

Open the Photos application, then go to Preferences/iCloud and check iCloud Photo Library, then Download Originals to this Mac. Then go to System Preferences/iCloud (Apple ID for Catalina or later) and turn Photos syncing on. The photos sync is extremely slow. It could take several days or more for the photos to sync.
