Can I make an alias my Primary Apple ID? (or change my current Apple ID)

Hi,

I am wondering if I can change my primary Apple ID either to an alias or change my @me/@iCloud.com account all together. (NB: I know I can change it to a third party email but that's not what I am after).

I made my Apple ID many years ago as a student and whilst I wouldn't classify it as embarrassing, now I am older I wish to have an ID that is a little more professional for work purposes. Is this possible? I made a more professional 'alias' but when I try to make it my primary ID it says 'You can only add the @iCloud.com account that is already on file for your account'.

If not it would be good to reconsider this as a kid 15 years ago who made the Apple ID ** may want to change his Apple ID to ** as he gets older.
