The safest place to buy used Macs is to look in Apple's refurbished section: https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished
Buying a Mac from other online sites is NOT recommended, as the seller can advertise false information. If you still must buy this Mac, I recommend conducting the following checks yourself BEFORE you purchase it:
- Check the hardware. Refuse the Mac if it does NOT return "ADP000": https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT202731
- Start up in macOS Recovery. If you run into a firmware password, refuse the Mac.
- Erase the Mac and reinstall macOS. If an Activation Lock screen appears and you're prompted for an Apple ID, refuse the Mac.
- When macOS is reinstalled, proceed through the Setup Assistant. If you run into a screen called "Remote Management", refuse the Mac and report the seller. The Mac belongs to a company and was likely stolen.
