Backup troubles

I’m getting a new phone tomorrow and am trying to back up my phone in preparation. I’ve had my automatic backup on but apparently it hasn’t functioned since April of 2020 and I was unaware. I’ve been trying to back it up but I keep getting a message saying “the last backup could not be completed.” It won’t say why or how to fix it. What should I do?

This support article has multiple iCloud solutions depending upon which error message you are seeing: If you can't back up to iCloud - Apple Support

Investigate multiple ways to backup, including to a computer: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

You may also be able to effect a direct device to device transfer, though it would be nice to have a backup too: Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
