naming a group text with an android phone in the mix
how come I cannot name a group text when one of the phones is an android? I can set up the group text but I cannot name it??

Since the ability to name group messages is a feature of iMessage, it's available when all participants use iMessage. Messages that are not iMessages, use your cellular service providers SMS service.
