How to remote erase wifi only ipad

I recently sold an wifi only 3rd gen ipad pro but forgot to reset it before I ship. Now the buyer is asking for my password to unlock it. I have remotely erased it in my iCloud and it says my ipad will be erased when it connects to the internet next time. But it must be already unlocked with a password for it to connect to the internet, isn't it? The remote erase seems pointless on a wifi only device if that is the case.

You are absolutely right. Your iPad has to be unlocked and then put on a Wi-Fi Network. Most Wi-Fi Networks today also have passwords so that iPad would have to have that password inserted to get on Wi-Fi. It certainly is not going to get on Wi-Fi on its own like it would if it were a cellular network.

The remote erase on a Wi-Fi only iPad is still worthwhile for organizations and institutions that issue iPads to their employees/students. There are several other examples as well, however, in the end, for users like you and me, this feature may not be that useful but nice to have.

Good Question. If the buyer/new wonder inputs wrong password multiple times then the iPad will get disabled and lock the person out. It will only erase the iPad if you have it set that way. The good thing is that once the iPad gets locked and disabled, then the new owner will have to reset the passcode. This resetting passcode procedure will erase the iPad completely. So, you are protected either way in this example.
