I just got my iPhone 13 Pro Max last night and all my outdoor photos are oversaturated, look fake, and I can't find a way to edit the HDR layers or even turn HDR off. The only solution is to turn down the saturation, but they still look fake, just less saturated.
Am I missing a setting?

I agree—photos are over saturated and fake looking. Sunset is the worst. Overall looks like some incredible technology but we need the ability to dial back the HDR. The default mode makes images look like cheesy screensavers produced by people who just discovered photoshop. Please advise, and/or update the software.
Look at the calendar taken with 1x standard len...i zoom in to take a look at the numeric...horrible.
It's a matter of taste; in most circumstances I love the way the photos look and in fact I always click "Edit" and use the magic wand to ramp things up a bit more.

If purchased from an Apple Store, you can get a full refund for any reason, or even none at all, for 14 days.
Other retailers have other policies.
It's not "destroying" the colors, rather the colors were oversaturating the SD picture and could not be accurately represented where they can be in HDR.
If you don't like the defaults, take the photo in ProRAW and edit on a Mac, or use Lightroom on iOS.
Definitely not true, it takes incredible low light photos, producing photos and video in conditions you used to get just blackness with previous devices.
But the photos with light are so terrible.
Yes, looks like the photo was taken by huawei phone from 2018. I hope that apple do something
I spoke at length to Apple support. This is a hardware issue, not a software issue. Hopefully it will be fixed in the next iPhone.
If you mean photos here, they are downconverted to SDR, reduced in resolution, and recompressed in a lossy manor when posted.
Please can you clarify further? I can hardly believe this is hardware… I’m sure better software optimisation can fix this. And simply bringing back the ability to turn off HDR!
I too frustrated with HDR images..
we can disable hdr effect by going to live mode and selecting same image or different image.. I am happy with that.
Many third party apps provide this functionality; Pro Cam works well for me.
I never owned a 12 Pro Max. Can someone please tell me if this is an issue on 12?
