Why can’t I add an Apple gift card to my wallet?

Every time I try to add the Apple gift card to the to my wallet when I’m playing a game, it only allows credit debit and PayPal. And I just spent 50 bucks on a friggin Apple gift card just to play games. I am soooo frustrated
