Banner notifications not appearing when using phone (iOS 15)

Since I updated to iOS 15, I’ve been having a very specific issue with notifications no longer appearing while I’m using my iPhone. When the phone is on the lock screen, I get notifications like I always did. But when I have the phone in my hand and am using it for something, the banner notifications that used to pop up at the top no longer appear. This isn’t the biggest deal, but it is kind of annoying because I then won’t see that I got a message until I notice the icon badge, and sometimes miss it if the app isn’t prominent on my home screen.

I’ve tried everything I can think of to fix this, including making the banner style persistent and showing previews always. No dice. Does iOS just no longer show these notifications after the update?

Yes, this occurs when I have either do not disturb or personal selected. I’ve tinkered with the settings for each, and there doesn’t appear to be anything I can do to get banner notifications to appear when the phone is awake other than to turn off these modes.

I’m guessing this is by design, but it’s a bad design. I turn on DND/personal so I don’t get bothered with notifications when the phone is lying on my desk, and notifications just go silently to my lock screen. But if I have it in hand and am using it, you can assume I’m not being disturbed, and I’d like to see the banners pop in so I don’t miss it entirely. That’s how it worked with DND on the last version of iOS; I don’t see why it was changed. Not a huge deal but kind of irritating.

crabapple12,

You can set up a focus to allow notifications from specific people and apps, so that when you have your Focus enabled, you are still receiving notifications from the people or apps that require your attention.

Apple does have a feedback site set up where you can leave your input on changes like this that are made. If you have a chance, you can leave suggestions on what you’d prefer to see and what would make your usage better - Product Feedback

Thanks.
