watchOS 8 broke shortcuts with "https" URL scheme

Hello,

I have Apple Watch S6 and I use Apple Shortcuts very often. Most of my shortcuts open web pages (action: Open URLs) and after I updated my watch to watchOS 8 I've been getting errors like this "Shortcuts could not open the app for the URL scheme "https". The app may not be installed on this device". It doesn't let me open any URLs using Shortcuts, but I can open the same URLs using iMessages, therefore I think there is a problem in Shortcuts app on the watch, and only on the watch, because the same shortcuts work perfectly on my iPhone 12.

Does anyone know why? Is this change meant to be in the recent watchOS update or is it a bug?

Thank you and kind regards!

Hi bailier,

thanks for reply and help. I updated iPhone to iOS 15 and it did not fix the problem. Also having iPhone unlocked at the same time as running a shortcut on Apple Watch was not successful, but I still managed to find a solution. I replaced shortcut action “Open URLs” with action “Show webpage at URL” and it fixed the problem. My guess is that action “Open URLs” is no longer in use for Apple Watch shortcuts since the watchOS 8 update.

Sincerely,

JaklicKr

Hi there JaklicKr,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We understand you're having some difficulties running Shortcuts on your Apple Watch and we'd be happy to assist the best we can. Although your Apple Watch is completely up to date, we'd also recommend making sure the paired iPhone is also updated with the latest version of iOS. You can check for that by following the steps listed in the article below.

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Also when ever you try to run these shortcuts on your Apple Watch, is your iPhone locked or unlocked? It's possible that the shortcut may not be able to the application if your iPhone is locked with a passcode so we'd recommend trying while your iPhone is unlocked and see if you notice the same behavior. You can also review what actions in shortcuts may not work the best when running from your Apple Watch in the support article below.

We hope this helps.
