Wild guess, the Return key on you keyboard is stuck.
Try disconnecting or unpairing your current keyboard and try another one.
Thank you for your reply. At first I didn't think it could apply as it is the new M1 iMac !! only a few months old.
However I am testing it against a smaller battery/Bluetooth version that I had with the previous iMac.
It seems as though you are right, I think the Return key is sticking and causing the problem. So a trip to the Apple store is on the cards.
