How to tell if Spotlight is indexing.

I've seen different methods, like using Activity Monitor. When I tried that nothing showed for a minute or two then it showed a few 'md' working.

Then I read that if you search you'll see a dot in the spyglass, but others say it doesn't show, but what does show indexing is working if you do a search the search result window will show if indexing - see img.
