Apple watch 3 won't update software with iPhone 11

Good afternoon, I haven't used my apple watch in over a year. I still have my old iPhone 10 that it was connected too, but I'm trying to pair my Apple watch series 3 to my newer iPhone 11. When trying to pair to the new watch, I receive an error that says unable to check for update as not on internet. Help?
