Order delayed

You have mentioned two very different things:

1. Your order, to be delivered in mid-October
2. In-Store availability

If your order is still in the “Processing Items” stage, you may cancel it and visit the Apple Store. If your order is “Preparing for Shipment’”, it’s too late to cancel and you have already been charged. In the latter case, you may either wait until mid-October or purchase a second iPhone and return the extra one when it arrives.
