Connecting iPad Pro 2020 to 2016 Macbook

Hi, I am trying to connect my iPad Pro 2020 to my 2016 MacBook Pro using a usb c wire. Both the adapter and wire are working fine. In fact, when I connect them to my headphones I can charge my headphones. However, it won't connect to my iPad Pro. I have a feeling that the current goes from my iPad to my MacBook instead of the other way round. Does anyone know a work around?
