Ensure that you have an active subscription for iCloud storage.
Open Settings ➔ Apple ID (Your Name at Top) ➔ iCloud ➔ Photos : Ensure that this is set to ON.
Open the Photos app and you will be notified that the photos are being uploaded to iCloud. If you would like to create some free space that is occupied by photos, currently, on your iPhone, then you can choose to Optimize iPhone Storage. Open Settings ➔ Photos ➔ Optimize iPhone Storage: Ensure that there is a check mark here. It will take a few hours over a Wi-Fi Network for the upload to iCloud to be completed. The total time will depend on how much data needs to be uploaded and the speed of your Wi-Fi Network.
