Support lifetime is not determined by time - but instead the technical requirements of new/updated versions of the Operating System.
The iPad Air1, mini2 and mini3 (released in 2013) remain in support for security updates - approaching 8 years of software support.
The iPad Air2 (released in 2014) remains in full support to this day after 7 years - and is capable of update to iPadOS15.

No one knows how long Apple will support their older mobile devices.
Currently, the 2014 iPad Air 2 will be supported until Sept. 2022.
So, that will be 8-years of full support from Apple and Apple may continue point security updates as they do with older iPads that can ONLY run iOS 12.
Typically, third party app developers continue to fully support older device for between 2-3 years AFTER Apple ceases full support for a range of their older devices.
My own 2015/2016 is still being supported and its already been almost 5-6 years and by the end of 2022, will be 7-years of support and I still anticipate my iPad Pro will still support iPadOS 16, in 2022.
Whoever told you this does NOT know what there are talking about.
No need to worry.
Expensive iPad Pro models should get, AT LEAST 6-7 years of full support from Apple.
No worries.

And this relates to your concerns for the longevity of support for iPad in what way? Unless your issue or concern is fully understood, it is almost impossible to provide explicit advice or guidance.
There are many photo-editing Apps from which to choose. iPad’s built-in capabilities are good, but if you looking for something with greater complexity and capability, you might consider Pixelmator Photo or Affinity Photo.
The free, built in Apple's iPadOS Photos app is good and easy to deal with.
Maybe look at Pixelmator Photo.
Maybe look at Adobe Lightroom-It has an interface that is easy to understand and navigate.
Any other major photo/images editing apps for iOS/iPadOS maybe not that user friendly or easy for you to use.
Best of Luck to You!
I need a user friendly photo editing program for my iPad Pro any suggestions?
Thanks
