My MacBook won’t turn on and it’s fully charged

Why won’t my MacBook turn on? It was working fine and then just wouldn’t come on all of a sudden.

Hi gray516,

I'm assuming that the screen is completely blank on your Mac. If it isn't, try these steps instead.

Try these steps to isolate the issue. Proceed to the next step only if the previous one fails.

  1. Hold down the power button on your Mac for 10 seconds to make sure that it is completely powered off. Then, press the power button again. (If your Mac has Touch ID, that also serves as the power button.)
  2. Try shining a flashlight at your Mac's built-in display. If you can see content on it very faintly, or if your Mac works as expected when connected to an external monitor, your built-in display backlight is probably dead and needs to be repaired.
  3. Try connecting a power cable to your Mac and wait 30 minutes. If it starts only when the power cable is connected, your battery needs to charge. If your Mac immediately dies when the cable is removed later on, your battery probably needs to be serviced.
  4. If your Mac has an Intel processor, reset the SMC.
  5. If your Mac has the T2 Security Chip, it won't start at all if the chip firmware is corrupted. If you have access to a second Mac, revive the firmware on the T2 Security Chip.
  6. If your Mac has the T2 Security Chip or runs on Apple silicon (M1), your Mac might be stuck in DFU mode. This is a special boot mode where the screen is completely blank, and your Mac waits for another Mac to supply it with genuine firmware. If you have a second Mac, follow the appropriate steps:
    1. Revive or restore an Intel-based Mac with Apple Configurator 2 - Apple Support
    2. Revive or restore a Mac with Apple silicon with Apple Configurator 2 - Apple Support
  7. If none of the above work, contact Apple Support. If you've chosen the chat option, please link this discussion so that they know what steps you have already taken.
