I have an older IPAD that I can’t open up. Is there any way to recover an old applied password that I don’t remember?

If you’ve forgotten the passcode on your iPad, or your iPad is disabled – Apple Support (UK)
No.
If that iPad has never had its data backed up, the restore processs will erase everything on that iPad, anyways, and the data will be gone forever.
