Photos missing from my hidden album

I just noticed that there are a large number of photos missing from my hidden album that I did not delete. They are just gone. What happened to them?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.6

Maybe they were "un-hiddened" somehow.

Nope. If that were the case they would have shown up in my photo library. My hidden photo count went from 1450 to 450 over night. They are simply GONE and I know I did not delete.
