Family sharing—individual data separate!

With family sharing of an app, does each member simply get access to a clean copy of the app for as long as sharing is in place? That is, can each family member maintain separate data? Examples: For a game, will everyone’s activity, points, progress be separate? For a productivity app like evernote, are members’ notes visible to other family members? Will the settings one person applies on an app be set for everyone who uses the app?
