Some synced album photos blank after iOS15 update

I updated my iPad 5 to iOS15 the other day and just noticed that a lot (maybe 1/4) of the photos synced from my iMac (OSX 10.14.6 Mojave) are now blank. They still show up but they are empty. Some albums are perfectly fine while others have mostly blank photos. I do not sync photos to iCloud. Any idea what is going on here? I tried re-syncing with my Mac but that made no difference.

I’m running iOS 15.1 currently but this issue started with 15.0.1 and continued with 15.0.2 and 15.1. I should note that I have iCloud photo sync turned off on this device and it has been off always. I’ve also noticed that if I take a new photo and edit it’s size that photo becomes blank as well though I can see it if I select edit again in which case I see the unedited version. For this reason I don’t think re-syncing will fix the problem. If I was to guess what is going on based on these symptoms there is some bug in the code that displays edited photos. I can’t say for sure but I’d be willing to bet that all of the “blank” photos were edited at some point in the past. Note: if I try to edit older blank photos I get an error message saying that the photo can not be edited.

Hi AlanBDahl,

It seems you're having trouble with your iPad Photos and we can help.

You mentioned syncing again, did you try removing all the photos and then syncing again?

Make sure they're removed, you restart your device and then sync again.

Which version of iPadOS are you currently running?

You may have an update to iPadOS 15.0.1:

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
