IMHO you do not need Java.

Java is old technology and has a history of being less than secure. It has been used by some developers as they write apps, and that's not usually a problem if the programmer know's what their doing.

It is also use by some entities at their websites. This is becoming less common as better and more secure tech gets used.

If the websites you visit don't require Java, then I wouldn't bother with it.
