Continued Connection Issue

My friend gave me her old Apple Watch and unpaired it from her last phone. It keeps saying to complete updates on my phone before I can connect to the Apple Watch but I’m all up to date. I believe the watch needs to update but can’t because I can’t connect to a phone. I’m also not 100% what generation of Apple Watch this is, it’s def not the newest.
