want to upgrade system

bought my IMac refurbished from Walmart and I would like to upgrade my system so I can run some of my programs. Currently I am running OS X EL Captain version 10.11.6 .

iMac, OS X 10.11

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which iMac model you have, click on High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur. It needs to be at least a late 2009 one to run a newer OS.

I did an online chat with a rep and unfortunately I can not upgrade my system ... So mad. I was under the impression i was getting a refurbished with a newer system . But thank you so much for taking time out of your day to try and help me . I truly appreciate it .
