I'm using time machine with an external backup disk and I have a very basic question that I can't seem to answer no matter what I read: is TM backing up the entire movies I'm making with FCP? In other words, if my mac crashed and I connected the TM backup to a new Mac, is the entire movie, complete with audio and video and timeline editing? Am I backing up the movie itself?

The system drive is divided into two volumes. One is not very large and is secured closed only for the system. There's another volume, most of the drive, that holds all your data, which you usually see in the sidebar that looks like this:
It holds all the user content, some system and library components and all the applications you downloaded, and Safari. That's what's backed up by Time Machine.

Time Machine backs up the entire data volume on your system, the users and the applications you installed. Whether it backs up your whole movie depends where the library and the media are stored. If they're all on your data volume, everything is saved.
Sorry to sound so obtuse, but what and where are "data volume?"
