Ideally, you'll make a Time Machine backup so that you can quickly restore your Mac files. Learn more: https://support.apple.com/mac-backup

To make a backup, you will need an external drive that can connect to your old Mac, and a way to connect it to your new Mac when it arrives..

A "found" drive at least as large as your "stuff" will suffice for a while, but best long term trouble-free operation is a drive over 2.5 times the size of what you are saving. Do not pay extra for an SSD drive or a drive that is fast -- Time machine runs at low priority in the background, and such backups do not benefit from a drive that is fast.
