Duplicate photos shown when importing

When I connect my iPhone 12 Pro to either my iPad Pro or MacBook Pro to download the photos to either device they show duplicates, and this is even when there are no duplicates on the phone. The iPhone shows only one however plug it into the MacBook or the iPad and they show two and sometimes three of the same photo?? This has been going on for months and even after software upgrades it's still the same.

Would love to know why this is happening and how to get rid of it. It's so frustrating to have so many of the same photos and when you're taking hundreds of photos to have to go through and delete them one by one is incredible slow and annoying. Really wish apple would sort this out as I'm reading this is also an issue for many other users.
