Is there anyway to connect my Macbook pro, retina 13 inch to my imac retina 4k, 21.5 inch to use the imac as a secondary device?
currently i'm using screensharing on the imac but would really help if i can use it more like a secondary monitor than to run the macbook pro from an app...

Nope. The Retina 4K iMacs have never supported Target Display Mode.
If your devices are new enough Apple may add Airplay-to-Mac support with Monterey, but for now a screensharing app is the closest you can get.
