I want to delete historical imessages off my device, but still have the attachements and messages stored in the cloud. Is this possible?

I read through this post and it's exactly as unclear as the rest of apples documentation.

Is it possible to set auto delete on the phone for iMessages and still have access to the deleted material in iCloud (assuming I have enough space?)

No, it is not possible. Messages deleted from any device, whether deleted manually or automatically are also deleted from iCloud.
