renamed my iPad ... the new name shows up in iCloud (and "find my" on other devices) - but not in Apple ID on my MacBook -- even after quitting iCloud and after restarting the computer.

Did you sign out of System Preferences/iCloud (Apple ID for Catalina or later) before restarting?
Thanks for your help! I signed out of iCloud and quit System Preferences before re-starting. I don't think I should sign out of system preferences (and risk losing content stored on iCloud).
iCloud has the correct name for the iPad. but System Preferences Apple ID shows the original name.
