I was having this problem, and found a way to make my iPhone appear in the sidebar of a Finder window. With a Finder window open go to:

Finder>Preferences>Sidebar>Locations> CD /DVD/ iOS Devices

If iOS Devices is checked the un-check it, wait about 10 seconds, then check it back again and close Finder Preferences.

If iOS Devices is not checked then check it, wait 10 seconds again and close Finder Preferences.

This works for me, at least, and it's a bit of a nuisance. I think it's a bug! Cheers, Ian.
