My WD My Book did the long initial backup of my iMac and then backed up regularly without fail for four days. Then it consistently failed at each scheduled backup. The files that are backed up are visible. The My Book has a huge unused capacity. The only error message is that the backup couldn't be made because of an "error".

This is the solution. Thank you. I turned off the automatic backup and tried First Aid again. It did not immediately work, but I rebooted with the backup turned off and then ran First Aid and it worked like a charm. It is now backing up regularly.

How much free space do you have on your boot drive? If there's not enough room for a local snapshot TM will fail to backup.
Go into Time Machine preferences and turn off TM. Then try running First Aid on the drive again.
What system are you running and how is the Time Machine drive formatted?
I've got about 514 GB free on my boot drive. The backups on the external hard drive total 449 GB. The most recent error message tells me "Can't connect to a current Time Machine backup disc" even though I can access the files on the disk and it appears mounted in my finder.
I'm running High Sierra 10.13.6 and the Time Machine drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). As far as I can see it has only one partition with GUID Partition Map. When I run First Aid in Disk Utility, I get the message "First Aid could not unmount the volume for repair."
