Makes my photos incompatible to my laptop. I have plenty of storage but can't do a **** thing with the files.
I need to convert them to Jpg files. Yes I know it takes more space. see first statement.
The photos are useless as heic, that is why I want to do this.
How do I convert files efficiently and not have to individually do each.

Go to Settings>Camera>Formats and change it to Most Compatible for now on. As far as changing the current HEIC, you will probably need to download them to a computer and use some type of converter. I'm not aware of any way to do that to photos already taken on the iPhone.
Hopefully Chris can help you get your images to be JPEG from now in.

I already switched the defaulted setting, Hence the question about Converting existing, not how to wrest control of my gear back from Apple..
As for exporting, it keeps throwing up a hair ball to export to my computer..
What kind of issue are you experiencing when attempting to export? What computer OS are you using?
I had already sorted that out before inquiring how to convert the heic files.
