Connecting a Satechi TYPE-C MULTI-PORT ADAPTER 4K WITH ETHERNET V2 to use DVD tray

Further to several phone calls to Apple Support and numerous Online LiveChat, I was eventually advised to purchase a Satechi TYPE-C MULTI-PORT ADAPTER 4K WITH ETHERNET V2 for my new 2021 M1 iMac. My query that seemed to confuse everyone, was how to continue using my former accessories, i. e. USB printer, DVD Disc Drive USB connection for MiniDV SVHS camera & player - all standard accessories that had connected directly to my former 2013 iMac.

I simply couldn’t believe that there was so much confusion both between Apple Support Staff and retail dealers. One representative even advised me to shop on Amazon, as The Apple store couldn’t help!

Now I discover that the DVD disc tray requires a Power source as I am getting a Warning Notification! Is it too much to expect that hardware, Adapter Leads etc follow a Standard and more easily identified in the future?

What you need is a self powered multi port dock. The Satechi is not. Return it and get one from OWC (MacSales.com). They have some very, very good docks that are self powered. Contact OWC's customer support to find out which of their docks will best suit your iMac and needs.

Or get a self powered optical Drive from OWC (if your optical drive is new and can be returned). The self powered dock would be the better solution.

Just note that some DVD drives will not work even if connected through a powered hub. The Apple Super Drive is one.
