iOS 15 storage wrong

Anyone seen this? This is settings/general/about iPhone XR iOS 15.01. iPhone storage settings shows zero kb used of 128GB.

I tried that. It used to update to zero K total used but would show correct app usage list. After I updated to 15.02 it wouldn’t update at all, zero K used and the app list just never appeared after 20 minutes or more.

But I just updated to 15.1 and that fixed it. For me, anyway. But it’s worth doing for anyone who has this problem. I have the same problem with my iPad Pro but haven’t updated it yet to see if 15.1 will fix that too. There’s also an Apple WatchOS update to 8.1. Maybe that’ll fix displaying watch storage too.

Try updating to 15.1 (or higher). That fixed it for me. Either the fix is in 15.1, or there’s a partial fix in there, or at some point the process of updating any version accomplishes the fix. I’d hang in and continue regular updating if the core issue doesn’t break anything for you, but at some point just dig in full reset and restore from backup, which will hopefully fix the issue in any case. Again though if you haven’t updated to 15.1, try that.

I tracked this down. It’s a known bug since the 15 betas. Generally it’s a problem calculating available storage on iOS devices. Specifically on iPhone and iPad it shows up as either over or underestimating the amount of available storage. The former, the one we’re talking about here, is fairly benign, until it’s not I suppose and you run out of storage with little or no notice. I don’t know how the OS would deal with it if that happened. Warn as usual? Fail cleanly? Fail messily? No idea. I’m just keeping a bit of a guess for my storage usage. I do the usual daily automated iCloud backups. Otherwise just waiting on a fix.

LOL! You've been cheated! Mine says 160 GB of 128 GB is available and zero space is used, though all of the detailed usage for each app seems to be fine. The suggestion that I've seen is that you should reset your phone after doing a back up to iCloud. Then restore. FWIW, Apple needs to fix this, not me! And, it's not really that important as long as it doesn't hinder proper functioning of the phone. Annoying though, and something that shouldn't have happened at all.

Hello sanford_may,

Apple Support Communities is a great place for help! It seems as though you’re seeing the Available Storage exceeds your device Capacity in Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If you haven’t already try restarting your iPhone as outlined in the following article

Restart your iPhone

If the Available storage continues to exceed the Capacity you’ll want to contact Apple. You can find their contact details via the Get Support website.

Take care!

I’ve restarted the phone. This looks like a bug introduced in iOS 15.0. Seems to have problems calculating storage usage. Updating to 15.0.1 didn’t fix it either. There are also a lot of reports of people getting low storage warnings in iOS 15 when they’ve got plenty of storage available. And my iPad on iOS 15 reports 788GB available of 512GB total storage. It’s pretty consistent across devices. There also may be something similar in watchOS 8. Can’t report total capacity or available storage on the watch or in the iPhone app. I’ll just wait for a fix.

Same problem here. My iPad shows that I have 165 GB available with a 128 GB capacity. On storage usage it shows zero KB used out of 128 GB. This started after the IOS 15 update and 15.0.1 or 15.02 updates have not fixed it. I did go through the Apple Support phone call and was told to re-start my Ipad (had already done this numerous times) and to reset settings on my device which I did again and nothing changed. The advisor then told me that I had use of my ipad so this wasn’t really a problem. I believe this statement was made to get me off the call because she had no answers. I must have called Apple No Support. I thought the latest update 15.0.2 would have fixed it but it had not.

I’m experiencing the same issue. Prior to upgrading to ios15, my iPad reported some 28 GB used of 32 GB available. And a huge chunk of that was the familiar gray nebulous “system files”.

after upgrading to iOS 15, I’m now told I’m using first 3.8 GB, later 4.2 GB, and then 6 GB, and now a mere 512 MB of 32 Gb available. That’s one heck of a feat since the first app listed alone takes up 1.6 gb. And I have a dozen or so apps with more than 250 MB and a score more with less.

right now I assume they’ll fix it when risk/priority aligns to do it. I don’t have storage space issues on either my iPhone or my iPad right now so for now I’ll just wait it out. I wonder how widespread it is. I figure there are the kind of people who regularly check their available storage and those that don’t. The latter won’t see it until it creates a problem, either low on storage or low on storage but the device think it’s not. Of note, watchOS 8 on my watch can’t return total or available storage either.
