new iPad - first Apple product: how to set it up for a kid?

I mean I don't have any other Apple products, and my Apple ID is created recently using my Gmail account. Will it be still possible to set up a new device for a child if I will just follow the instructions on the screen? I've read the user manual already on the website, but according to it you need to have your own Apple device to be able to set up and control your child's iPad? And what if I don't have it??
