Your watch will be assigned a phone number for billing purposes, but it will not be a number that you can use for calling or texting. In the industry it’s called a BTN (Billing Telephone Number).

You are correct, however, as you mentioned it is for billing purposes only for distinguishing between mobile and Apple Watch. I am in agreement with you, Mr. Finch.
