lock a note

How do I lock a note?

After I hit the ... and select Lock, there are multiple undefined fields

What are these?

And an undefined toggle...what does this do?

And how do I get it to use TouchID?

I'm on ver 14.8 (heard that 15.0 is buggy, so I'm holding off)

Thanks

iPhone 8, iOS 14

Following is from an iPad…

The password is the first input field, and is required.

Verifying of the password—re-entering the same password—is the second field, and is required.

The third field is the password hint field and is a message to yourself about the password chosen; a hint or suggestion or reminder to help you with a forgotten password, and is optional.

The Face ID switch allows Face ID to be used to access the note, though (see below) the password remains required.

If this abovementioned info on the fields and if that above screenshot does not answer this…

Please post a screenshot of what you are seeing…

Restart the iPhone, and see if it works better.

Failing that, update to iOS 15.0.1, and try again.

And more generally… The data in the note is encrypted with the password. Forget that password, and if the hint was entered but was not helpful or if there was no hint entered, then the data cannot be decrypted. Touch ID does not replace remembering the encryption key; the password to the note. We see far too many postings from folks that used Touch ID for a while, and had forgot the password. Which works great, right up until Touch ID requires you to re-enter the decryption key; the note password.

Yeah; there’s something wonky with your Notes app here.

Just checked an iPhone, and the display looks nearly identical to the iPad image I’d posted earlier.

From an iPhone running iOS 14.8:

What to try…

Force-quit Notes and try again, failing that restart the iPhone and try again, failing that delete and re-download Notes and try again, failing that back up and update iOS (iOS 15.0.1 is current) and try again. Failing all that, use the Get Support link in the upper right of this webpage, and discuss your options and alternatives with Apple.

Note that using FaceID does NOT replace your Notes password. It only keeps you from having to enter it so often. (sorta like how FaceID reduces how often we have to enter our device’s passcode)

If you are ever prompted for the Note password and DON’T have it … you will NOT be able to access the note and there is NO recovery.

Looks like you have iPhone screen zoomed, which is preventing from seeing all the options in the fields. Turn zoom off.

The thing that makes me think it’s not a zoom-related setting is the Cancel / Set Password / Done header placement.

That’s correct.

If the iPhone display were zoomed, that header would also be zoomed, and the left portion of the header would be zoomed off the display.

As for your never-forget-the-password comment, I know folks that have loaded the password into the Hint. 🙄

I keep a file on my laptop with all of my passwords described in code that only I understand. Really, nobody else would have a clue what I'm talking about.

The file (like most of my pc files) is backed up daily by MS. And I offload key files (including this one) quarterly to a USB drive that goes into my safe deposit box.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they really aren't out to get you.😲
