Convert Older Playlists to Lossless

nitish192 mentioned "signing out your id from media & purchase it will delete all download songs but your playlist remain as it is . After few minute sign in again and put your playlist in download . It will download in his-res automatically". I'm assuming this means Removing the download, signing out of my Apple ID, logging back into my Apple ID, download the playlist, after which the songs will be Lossless. Have I accurately described this process? And, has anyone tried it, does it work? Thanks!

Hello bardfromedmonton,

We noted you have some questions about downloading audio in the lossless format. We'd be happy to assist.

There's some helpful info on that topic here: About lossless audio in Apple Music

As the page notes, "To get a lossless version of music that you already downloaded from Apple Music, just delete the music and redownload it from the Apple Music catalog."

To add on to that, you'll also want to double-check that in Settings > Music > Audio Quality > Downloads, that you have Lossless (or Hi-Res Lossless) selected).

Signing out of the Apple ID (Settings > [your name]) may indeed cause any songs saved to the device to no longer be downloaded to the device. Though you may also opt to manually remove the downloads of your playlists via the (...) button, and then tap once on the cloud icon to download them back.

Take care.

bardfromedmonton,

Are the songs you're seeing without Lossless or Hi-Res Lossless directly from the Apple Music catalog? Or were they from iTunes purchases or elsewhere? We ask as the following page notes, "If you subscribe to Apple Music, you can re-download music in lossless format from the Apple Music catalogue only.": About lossless audio in Apple Music

Be sure to also ensure the device is using the latest iOS version, which is currently iOS 15.0.2: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

For affected songs that are downloaded, you can try removing just the download of one song (while keeping it in your library), and then see if it shows the label for Lossless or Hi-Res Lossless.

Cheers.

I am hesitant to delete the playlist as it's one I've curated over a few years, I know I could make a copy of the song list, delete the playlist, search and create the playlist again, however this would be quite laborious. I removed the download, waited a day or two, and now see quite a few of the songs are now Lossless. Some of the songs are older (60's & 70's), is it possible that some tracks are not available in a Lossless or Hi-Res Lossless format?
