Explain the features on MacBook Air power adaptor

Can someone explain the features on the MacBookAir power adaptor?

Diferent parts open up and I'm not sure how they relate?

The only part that is removable is the plug; it can be removed to put in another type of plug for use in another country or it can be removed to attach the following extension: Power Adapter Extension Cable - Apple

A little warm is normal. Very hot is not normal. You should contact Apple Support for more help. See the Get Support link at the top right of this page.

You may also want to remove the extension cord and plug directly into a wall outlet and keep a very close watch on it for a short time.
