FaceTime and iMessage from Apple Watch phone number

If I buy and set up an Apple Watch SE (with GPS and cellular) for a family member who does not have their own iPhone would they also be able to set up the newest iPad mini (with 5G) with their own Apple ID and then FaceTime and iMessage from the phone number associated with their watch while using their iPad?

I am aware that Apple Watches do not pair with iPads, I’m only concerned with them being able to FaceTime and iMessage using their phone number instead of their email address.

Thank you for your time and help.

Hello there,

We see you have a question regarding setting up iMessage/FaceTime using a phone number link to an Apple Watch. We can help to clarify.

This page here details the process on adding (or removing) the phone number to use with Messages/FaceTime: Add or remove your phone number in Messages or FaceTime

As the top of the page notes, "You can use the phone number of your iPhone with Messages and FaceTime on your Mac, iPad, or iPod touch."

They can use their individual Apple ID for FaceTime and iMessage, but this won't allow them to send messages via SMS in the same way that having that forwarded from an iPhone would.

For clarification, sending SMS/MMS messages on the iPad would require an iPhone, as well as enabling the Text Message Forwarding feature, as seen here: How to forward SMS/MMS text messages from your iPhone to your iPad, iPod touch or Mac

Take care.
