Container Disc3 and APPLE SSD AP0512Q Media

Hi folks,


I know this question has been asked before but I haven't seen an answer yet.


My Mac (About this Mac)

MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020)

Chip Apple M1

Memory 8 GB


Since October 8, 2021, Disc Doctor now reports internal storage in an unexpected manner:


APPLE SSD AP0512Q Media

> Macintosh SSD (greyed out)

Data

Get Info listings for each entry below


Previously the report displayed only 2 tiers of which Macintosh SSD was the second and not greyed out.


I'd just like to know what this means, why the change and is there an issue I need to worry about given this change has only occurred in the last 3 days?

Not advised to use third party cleaner.s/optimizes/ Disc Doctor. If you have an issue—then state what is the issue—why Disc Doctor?


I see no issue. The number scheme is relative...maybe your Disc Doctor has altered this.


It looks like you possibly reinstalled the macOS at some point from Recovery(?) or some such... It is obvious you changed the name of your drive from the default(s).


You get a better look from the Terminal.app, copy and paste:

diskutil list internal

Big Sur has gone one step further adding a “snapshot” of the current system for its (SSV) Signed System Volume, as you see in the list. This is the new normal as well. This would be the 'Macintosh HD'


Big Sur use this snapshot of the current system for its SSL (Signed System Volume ) w/ strong cryptographic protections to store system content .

What problem are you having specifically?


A screen shot of what you're seeing in disk utility would be helpful. That will tell exactly what's associated with your internal drive.


The bare minimum you should see is Macintosh HD (OS) and Macintosh HD - Data (your data). If those are present, and your machine is operating as expected, chances are all is well.


There can be other stuff, but a picture is far easier to digest than a couple of pages of data.

I haven't made any changes to the partitions or added or removed any; there's been no changed since I bought my Mac in Dec. 2020.. The odd new volumes with inconsistent disc usage reports only appeared on Friday, well, not strictly true, I only noticed it on Friday.

Yes, I'm confused by the change and because it wasn't instigated by me it's also worrying.

The desktop picture vanished (replaced with complete black) but that's the only thing I've noticed performance wise (I don't feel that's a big issued). Could it be a virus?

No, not a virus, Macs get Malware but not viruses.


This is going to be an odd question I guess, but how do you know it changed? In other words, why did you have cause to look when you first got the machine; did you suspect a disk problem? Or was it previously owned and you were trying to ascertain what the previous owner may have done?


Just trying to pin down what happened as things change for a reason but the reason may be obscured.

Thanks again,

I formatted a USB stick on Thursday (or thereabouts), all looked as it had since the Mac was new. On Friday I had a CD inserted in an external drive and checked Disc Doctor to see if the DVD drive was worfoundking (I hadn't been able to import to Music but subsequently learned the drive wasn't plugged in correctly).

Isn't the important thing that on day "x" it was exactly as I remembered it and on day "y" it was totally different displaying more volumes with contradictory space remaining? But as for "how do I know", I suppose as a Mac user of over 21 years, I'm familiar with would should be there and importantly, what was there until very recently. I don't think I can remember a time when disc doctor and about this Mac reported different space available values.

Very odd.
