FaceTime audio cuts during conversation - iPhone 12 mini

Is anybody experiencing the FaceTime audio issues on their iPhone 12 mini models? I know 3 people who suffer from the same experience. It doesn't matter whether I'm on WiFi (fiberoptic), or LTE/5G, the audio is dropping during conversation as someone would just randomly keep turning ON and OFF microphone and speaker on iPhone 12 mini. That of course affects also the other side of on the phone conversation as the microphone cuts drops the spoken word... This is incredibly annoying, I got my iPhone 12 mini swapped by Apple, I tried freshly flashed New iPhone setup (DFU flash) as well as tried using different Apple ID, but it simply won't help.

Thank you all in advance for your thoughts and ideas!

I have same problem with my old 12 and new 13 since they switched to 5G. I talk a lot over FaceTime Audio and it created a lot of problems to me. I found SOLUTION for me. I just switched to LTE ONLY in network settings and works great. I think its problem when iPhone want to switch between LTE and 5G. I tried everything before: restore, switching sim, even switch to eSIM but only LTE settings helped

I’ve also been having this issue. I have the new iPhone 13 Pro Max. I’ve had people constantly tell me that my voice keeps cutting in and out. Recently, I noticed my friend’s voice was cutting in and out during a call. What worked for me, although not a permanent solution, is to mute myself after i spoke and the voice of the other person came through clearly. So I thinks it FactTime continuously trying to prioritize which microphone to use. (Caller or receiver).

Alternatively, using MacBook for FaceTime works well and it’s clear.

Agreed -- for me it is my voice cutting out on the other person's side. They come through normally.

This is with both of us on high-speed good WiFi connections (but really all connections).

This happens with case on and case off on my phone.

The only way to 'resolve' is to use a headset -- so it's a problem with the iPhone's hardware/software/etc. and not a connection problem or a FaceTime server problem.

Why Apple is doing nothing to address this actively is appalling. These are brand new phones less than a year old in many cases.

Hi Duncho,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities.

We understand that FaceTime audio is cutting out and we're happy to help.

"If you can't hear a person's voice clearly, hear crackling, hear static, or have issues with sound quality," follow the steps in the Apple Support article If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker.

"If you have connection or sound quality issues with FaceTime

If your cellular connection or Wi-Fi network are running slow, or other users are streaming audio or video on the same Wi-Fi network, you might have these issues:

  • Connection alerts or unable to connect
  • Choppy video calls
  • Black screen
  • Dropped calls

Make sure that both you and the person that you're calling are using a fast Wi-Fi or cellular connection. If you’re using Wi-Fi, FaceTime requires a broadband connection."

If the FaceTime app is still not working as expected, follow the steps found in the Apple Support articles below:

If you can't make a FaceTime call on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open

Best regards.

So now I can with confidence conclude that turning off 5G didn't help in my case. I had less drop outs recently, but yesterday during FaceTime conversation while been connected to WiFi, the other part was complaining that can not read anything I'm saying because of heavy drop outs. I quickly navigated to Mobile data settings and enabled 5G and consequently disabled it again. It didn't help, so I tried during the call disable WiFi and was continuing "conversation" on LTE. No change as well.

My conclusion:

    1. or my iPhone 12 Mini is eavesdropped by government using some of those nasty Israeli tools
    2. or Apple has bug in their design of new iPhones (12 and 13)
    3. or FaceTime servers are/were overloaded

As soon as I drop iPhone 12 min and right in that moment continue conversation using my old iPhone 8 with same Apple ID, the voice is clear and uninterrupted on both ends.

I've had similar problems with my iPhone X. I don't think it is a question of bandwidth or connection strength on either end, as those with whom I speak usually have good connections, as do I. The cutting out of the audio during facetime calls, both audio and video calls, almost seems like the audio is "peaking" and thus cutting out. It is not interference or background noise, but full disappearance for a word or two. It is similar to peaking audio in a sound system. I understand that the iPhone should be segregating its own mic from audio received on its speakers, to avoid feedback and interference, but it seems that it is not. I wonder if there is a setting, or a control (perhaps connect with the newer safety features for speaker volume?) that is not properly set.

I wish the cause of this problem could be identified, as it is very annoying.

Hi Jeff,

thanks for your feedback, I looked around on the community also on internet but none of the articles are applicable to me (us). Also my connection quality is very decent as LTE, also WiFi (see screen print below).

Could this misbehavior be caused by my iPhone been hijacked with government spying software? How could I fix this? I tried low level flash (DFU) with latest iOS, bit it didn’t help.

Duncho,

The Apple Support articles that we provided can help solve issues with sound quality and with the FaceTime app not working as you expect.

Please note that the person that you're calling on FaceTime also needs to be connected to a fast broadband connection.

Not really, seems my iPhone is eavesdropped or something is wrong with it. I even replaced my iPhone under warranty, but it didn’t help. I tried different SIM (network providers) as well as various WiFi, but none helped. Sometimes it cut audio more, sometimes less. It also could be that Apple designed something wrong, but not many ppl care to report it, nor trying to find a fix. Please let me know in case you manage to find a workaround.

I'm not sure I understand what exactly you meant. If you are saying that the issue might be on side of the other person whom I'm talking to. If so, it is not the case because even if I'm calling to someone else to whom I never spoke to, the complaint is there and ppl are saying that I am only one with whom they experience this kind of issue.
