What does "notifications silenced" mean in Messages?

I’ve been texting with a good friend of mine and all of a sudden at the very bottom of our texting thread it says “🌙 Molly has notifications silenced “. What does this mean? Is she specifically silencing my specific text messages so she doesn’t receive them or the banner doesn’t pop up? She has an iPhone as well and I’ve never seen this message before. My feelings are a bit hurt but I’m not really sure what it means, if someone could explain this to me I would so appreciate it.

Hi vinnetta208,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities.

We understand that you’re seeing a notifications silenced message when messaging a friend in Messages app and we’re happy to help.

It looks like your friend uses Focus on their iPhone. When a person sets up Focus on their iPhone, then you might see a message displayed in the Messages app that says [contact name] has notifications silenced. This means that the person you’re messaging has their notifications silenced. Please note that you can still notify your friend if it’s urgent. Learn more about Focus here: Use Focus on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Best regards.

I don’t know if anybody still needs help with this issue. I found a way to eliminate the silenced notification message. After going to settings and turning off Focus on all the devices associated with my Apple ID, i kept on getting the same message. It wasn’t until I went to settings, scroll down to messages, and turned on (allow messages to access) Focus. I think this allowed messages to read my settings for Focus (which was at this point turned off).

People such as myself are reporting this even when the other person (whose ID reports notifications silenced) does NOT have Focus turned on. In my case, the other person did not even have Focus (still on a prior iOS), and DND was NOT on. I verified this myself by examining the other phone. I was able to disable the notice from that phone by turning DND *ON*. Then when turning DND off again the notification did not come back on .

I'm not a fan of this "focus" feature. As others have stated, to resolve this issue, go to settings in all apple devices to the "focus" feature. You'll see the option "Share across devices" and simply click on the slide button to turn this off. I then immediately checked my iMessages and the friend who had her "notifications silenced", no longer has them silenced. I don't understand this at all, but by ensuring my devices were no longer sharing "focus" status, I have resolved this issue.
