Hi mpearson_,
Welcome to the Apple Community,
where some of us do our best to help each other troubleshoot.
Wondering if you are using Mac, PC, or another device,
and
Which operating system you have installed ...
and
if your software up-to-date.
and
if you have enough free space in Messages, for smooth operation of the app.
Also:
IF you have changed your Apple ID or Apple ID password recently,
you may need to update your sign-in info. on iMessage.
This article (link below) from Apple support may help
What to do after you change your Apple ID or password

Or if nothing so far has helped, you might want to try browsing these articles:

Hi windomcc,
Welcome to the Apple Community,
Wondering if you have enough memory / storage free (at least 50 Gb) for your Mac to operate smoothly.
How to check / free up / storage space on your Mac:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206996
Updates depend on the version (year) of your Apple Desktop
Apple Support have an article online that may help:
Identify your iMac model:
(For all earlier models (up to 2013)... the latest operating system that can be installed is listed )
https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201634
Seems:
iMacs introduced in late 2015 or later can be updated to Mac OS Monterey
macOS Monterey is compatible with these computers
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212735
How to upgrade to macOS Monterey:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212735
iMacs 2014 upwards can be updated to macOS Big Sur 11.6
How to get the older versions of MacOS
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683
Hope this helps you.
My Apple Desktop has not allowed my to add E-mails, utilize messages, and blocked access to new internet sites.
I have looked for updates but I have not seen or been able to access any updates.
