installing microsoft office on my mac

I have a Microsoft Office:mac 2011 disc which I believe allowed me to install on 5 computers. My iMac on which it was installed completely died and I want to install it on my current iMac from 2017. I have an external disc drive for the disc and when I try to install it, I see a Mac installer folder to click on and then nothing really happens after I click on it. I can see the disc icon on my desktop. When I initially tried, I got an error message telling me it could not be installed but unfortunately I didn't pay attention to the detailed reason and closed the message and tried again. I have disconnected all and reconnected in hopes the message will pop up again but it has not.

Also, can you still buy a disk to install or am I forced to do the annual or monthly subscription if I can never get this to work.

Much thanks for any advice,

iMac, OS X 10.11

What version of Mac OS is installed on the computer, that determines what version of Office for Mac can be installed. I am almost certain a 2017 iMac is too new to run Office for Mac 2011. I suggest that you subscribe to Office 365 or purchase Office for Mac 2021.

If your 2017 iMac is running Catalina or Big Sur that version of MS Office will not install nor run. It should work on macOS Mojave and earlier.

If you're not tightly wedded to the MS Office suite of apps there are free, open-source alternatives: LibreOffice and SoftMaker FreeOffice 2018. Both can open, edit and save MS Office documents in the native MS Office formats or their own format. Their GUI isn't as smooth as the original apps but the price makes it worth while for me.
